A normal labor is spontaneous in onset, low-risk and remain the same until the delivery. It is defined as the occurrence of regular uterine contractions where the cervical dilates simultaneously. The onset of labor starts anytime between 38 to 42 weeks of gestation due to several physiological changes in the body. Increase in the frequency and intensity of uterine contractions is an indication of commencement of normal labor.
Since normal labor is a painful process, many pain relief methods have been introduced among which labor analgesia is one. It includes epidural analgesia that comes under regional analgesia. It is initiated with a local anesthetic agent that blocks the afferent conduction of its innervations. Epidural require around 15 minutes to onset of its action.
